Reminder: Email about LSC Guidelines Relating To Personal Social Media Postings

April 14, 2025
On March 21, staff received the following email from administration@pslegal.org:
Many of our staff are wondering if they can/should identify that they work for PSLS on their personal social media accounts. Unfortunately, we are in challenging times and this is an important question that we each must think through. I hope this email provides additional needed guidance so that you all can make an informed decision on this topic.
While PSLS as an organization is restricted from political or lobbying activities, all PSLS employees have a right to have a voice outside of PSLS. However, identifying PSLS as your employer on your social media account could cause PSLS to be linked to your personal postings. It is LSC's recommendation that employees do not include PSLS as their employer in social media accounts if the employee is planning on creating, posting, sharing or liking content that could be construed as a prohibited activity. Instead of identifying your employer as PSLS, you can state that you are a poverty lawyer (for our attorneys) or that you have worked in legal aid for ___ years. If you choose to identify PSLS as your employer on social media either in the demographics section of your social media account or in a post, LSC recommends that the employee include a disclaimer stating that their opinions are not PSLS' opinions. The disclaimer protects PSLS from accusations of lobbying or political activity that could jeopardize our federal funding.
If you choose to identify PSLS as your employer in the demographics section of your social media account, LSC recommends the following disclaimer:
"Work: ______ at PSLS (all posts are mine and not my employer's)"
If you choose to identify PSLS as your employer in a social media posting, LSC recommends the following disclaimer:
"I work at PSLS (all posts are mine and not PSLS') ..."
