This is a free presentation for housing providers about Fair Housing laws and the new protection against source of income discrimination. Emily Petri, supervising attorney in Prairie State Legal Services' Bloomington office, will be our presenter.

Fair housing is the right of a person to choose housing free from discrimination. This refers to any practice that limits housing choice because of someone's particular trait. Those traits include race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status (families with children), disability, age, ancestry, military or military discharge status, marital status, protective order status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and, most recently, source of income. A new Illinois law went into effect January 1, 2023, making it unlawful under the Illinois Human Rights Act for landlords to make decisions adverse to tenants and applicants on the basis of their source of income.
