The Illinois Assistance for Aged, Blind, and Disabled (AABD) Cash assistance program is designed to help people over 65 and those with disabilities pay for their basic needs - housing, clothes, utilities, etc. Data shows this program is highly underutilized. For example, we recently asked the Illinois Department of Human Services how many single-person SNAP households receiving SSI also receive AABD Cash. For reasons we'll discuss in this training, the overwhelming majority of these individuals should qualify for AABD Cash. However, only 12% actually received it. In this training, we'll discuss: What is AABD Cash? Who qualifies? How is the monthly benefit amount calculated? How do you apply and maximize monthly benefits for yourself and your clients? What are some reasons why this program might be so highly underutilized?
