In Honor of HerStory

Celebrating Women, Empowering Futures

"In Honor of HerStory" celebrates the women who have supported you while ensuring that women across Illinois get the legal help they need during life’s most difficult moments.

March is Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month celebrates contributions women have made to the United States and recognizes the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

Step forward in solidarity for International Women's Day (IWD) 2025 to help #AccelerateAction. Around the world and at home lives of women and girls have improved while we steadfastly push for progress.

The American Bar Association joins with the world community today to celebrate International Women's Day, which recognizes the social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women and commits to the acceleration towards true equality for all women and girls.

Mary Smith, Immediate Past President of the ABA

We don't accomplish anything in this world alone... and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.

Sandra Day O'Connor, First Woman Appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women's Day we sat down with PSLS leaders and contributors to share stories of leadership, mentorship, and purpose.

As an attorney, my grandmother was my first inspiration. My grandmother was an attorney back when few women were attorneys, earning her law degree in 1967. She never would have considered herself a trailblazer, but rather a lifelong learner who came upon the law as an intellectually challenging and dependable way to support herself and her family. But to me, she is an inspiration. She taught me to dream big, and never give up!

Denise E. Conklin
PSLS Executive Director

I ended up in the legal profession because my parents bought a convenience store in Lexington, Kentucky. They searched for an attorney and couldn’t find one who looked like them, made them feel comfortable, or made them feel they belonged in the room. I saw that unmet need and wanted to give people like my parents the choice of having an attorney that reflected their community.

Judge Sonni Choi Williams
ISBA President

Law was always on my mind because my father was an attorney and later became a judge. My legal internships in Illinois, Michigan, and Texas were all led by women. I remember a huge milestone when I was able to get political asylum in the U.S. for a priest from Honduras who I represented in immigration court. That was a life-changing experience for me.
