Staff Attorney

DESCRIPTION: Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. (PSLS) is a non-profit civil legal aid organization with 39 years of experience providing high quality civil legal services to low-income persons. We operate 12 field offices in 36 counties in northern and central Illinois. Our expertise extends to the full range of civil legal issues commonly encountered by low-income persons; this includes family law, public benefits, consumer law, and foreclosure, among other areas. We also operate a number of special projects, with diverse funding to provide legal advocacy services to persons with HIV/AIDS; disabled children and adults; senior citizens; the homeless; and victims of domestic violence, and many others. Annually, PSLS handles over 22,000 applications for legal help and serves over 16,000 clients. PSLS has strong training and litigation support for its staff. We are seeking applicants for a FULL-TIME STAFF ATTORNEY position in our community legal services office located in WAUKEGAN. The position is projected at 37.5 hours per week.

This position will work with an attorney with more than 10 years of legal experience in immigration law to assist immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault as well as other victims of domestic violence to obtain the appropriate legal relief. Spanish language proficiency is very desirable for this position.

Individual must be able to handle all functions related to casework from initial intake through representation of clients before all relevant agencies, courts, etc. This position is responsible for representing clients for domestic violence orders of protection and related domestic case issues including U-visa, T-visa, VAWA-self petitions, and other family-based immigration relief. We seek to provide holistic legal services and representation in related housing law, and public benefits issues may be part of such services. Strong organizational and information management skills, the ability to prioritize and work with minimal supervision, excellent time management skills and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and other computer applications is needed. Compassion and commitment to serving the special needs of low-income victims of abuse is essential.

Our attorneys are expected to engage in a full range of legal activities, including the preparation and conduct of administrative hearings and trials of cases.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school and current admission to, or eligibility for admission to, practice in Illinois. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting equal access to justice, strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral/written communications, research skills, and computer competency. The applicant must have the ability to work effectively as a team member. Occasional travel is required, with a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Preference is given to applicants with immigration law experience and Spanish language proficiency

SALARY: Competitive non-profit salary depending on experience.
