How to Get Help        Find Your Local Office

Why can't I send an email request for help?

Email can be very convenient, but it has some weaknesses when used to provide help about a legal matter.

Prairie State Legal Services follows accepted rules of professional conduct for attorneys and rules imposed by some of our funders on the services we can provide. In order to follow all the rules properly, and provide clients with the best possible legal services, we begin our relationship with a potential client by a direct conversation with a staff attorney either through the telephone counseling service or at one of our intake sites.

During that initial conversation, the interviewing attorney can make sure that we follow the rules concerning potential conflicts of interest and any other restrictions about eligibility. We must check these items before we can address a specific issue.

If you send an email about a specific legal problem it will not help resolve your problem. We cannot respond to the specific issue you wrote about without potentially breaking the rules related to the practice of law and those set out by our funders. If you send an email about a case, our only  reply will be to send you an email directing you to contact us through the telephone counseling service.
